$65 Million Land Sale Advances Naval Air Station Redevelopment

The former South Weymouth Naval Air Station redevelopment took a major step forward this week with a $65 million land sale that clears the way for new housing, commercial development, infrastructure and open space spanning Weymouth, Rockland and Abington.

New England Development and Brookfield Properties are moving ahead with the long-awaited South Weymouth Naval Air Station project following the $65 million land transaction, according to the town's News Flash. The deal advances plans for a mixed-use development that has been in the works for years across the three-town parcel.

Mayor Molisse issued a message urging residents to prepare for the coming heat, advising people to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity, and check on elderly neighbors. Separately, the town has begun cyclical parcel and property inspections, with inspectors going door-to-door to examine both interiors and exteriors of properties; residents with questions or concerns can call 781-682-3677.

The Wessagusset Walk remains closed through today, July 7, for ongoing safety work, with updates to follow if the reopening timeline changes. The town is also asking residents to weigh in on regional walking and biking infrastructure gaps as part of a partnership with the Boston Region MPO.

SCHOOLS

Weymouth Public Schools is operating on its summer schedule, with office hours adjusted for the season and guidance posted for families on how to reach the district over the break. The district also released its Summer Reading Lists, offering grade-level learning assignments and suggested titles for students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

The School Committee's next meeting is scheduled for August 20 at Weymouth Town Hall.
