Needham Board of Health Approves Biosafety Committee Changes, Reviews Teen Health Data

NEEDHAM — June 26, 2026 — Needham's Board of Health received 2025 teen health survey data showing mental health improvements but persistent youth alcohol concerns. At the June 26 meeting, Emily and Julie presented Metro West Adolescent Health Survey results showing 83.5 percent participation at Needham High School and 80.7 percent at the middle school; high school substance use declined across all categories from 2023 to 2025, but Needham students continue to report higher alcohol use than the Metro West regional average, a trend confirmed as also higher than the board's three cluster communities of Dedham, Walpole, and Westwood. An estimated 31 high school and 23 middle school students reported a lifetime suicide attempt, prompting board members to call for prioritized, coordinated outreach across town departments. The board voted 5-0 to update the biosafety committee, adding public health staffer Emily and removing Sai, who was promoted to a shared services role. Public Health Director Tim also briefed the board on a last-minute arrangement with the Needham Public Schools to produce roughly 60 daily box lunches for homebound seniors at approximately $7.50 per meal after Springwell abruptly ended home delivery of its congregate lunch program in late May, with the stopgap to run until the Council on Aging kitchen reopens around January 2027.
