Needham COA board approves minutes, moves officer election ahead of member's surgery

NEEDHAM — April 9, 2026 — Needham's Council on Aging received a three-year program report on an embedded social work initiative at the town's food pantry and approved moving its officer election to May. Social worker Isabel Dick presented data from her weekly Wednesday office hours at the Needham Community Council food pantry, describing a client base primarily aged 40 to 60, with housing applications and resource referrals as the most common needs, and a Ukrainian family helped to housing, employment, and school enrollment as a headline success. Director Latanya Kaphart reported hiring the center's final van driver and a new administrative staffer, Marianne Black, starting April 21, and noted she has secured four new event sponsorships in a single day amid concerns about potential programming funding gaps; board members agreed a written sponsorship policy is needed. A board member relayed that developer Bullfinch has presented preliminary plans to the Planning Board for a mixed-use development at Muzzy Ford that could include up to 500 units with 55-plus senior housing, though rezoning is required and details remain unresolved. A $15,000 MassDOT medical transportation grant is contracted but stalled awaiting a state document, and a $40,000 Metro West weekend meal supplement grant is in jeopardy after a letter of collaboration could not be secured in time. The board voted unanimously to move its officer election from June to May after a member announced hip replacement surgery scheduled for June 5.
