NEEDHAM --

TOWN -- Needham Park and Recreation's tennis program has grown to a competitive spring league with four teams, up from a single team four years ago, plus Wednesday, Saturday and now Sunday morning group sessions that regularly fill to about 80 students each, the tennis director told the Program Commission on September 14. The commission is weighing the director's request to let certified pros offer private lessons through the department; members said the town's longstanding policy against renting fields and courts for private instruction, since taxpayers fund those facilities, could be reconsidered at a future meeting.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Needham Youth Hockey Association's website listed a full slate of travel-team matchups for the week: Girls U10-2 against Cape Ann U10 B at Stoneham Arena, U14-3 against Beverly Bantam 1 at LoConte, U8-1 against Hyde Park Mite 1 in Cambridge, U8-2 against Wellesley Mite 2 at Wellesley Rink 2, U8-3 against Natick Mite 3 in Cambridge, U12-2 against Medford Peewee 1 at LoConte, U10-3 against Wellesley A1 at Boston Sports Institute, Girls U10-1 against Milton U10 B at Ryan Arena, U10-4 against Waltham Squirt 5 and U10-2 against Woburn Squirt 1 at St. Sebastian's, U14-1 against Arlington Bantam 1 at St. Sebastian's, U12-1 against Parkway Peewee 1 at St. Sebastian's, and U18-1 against Dorchester Midget-Fall 1 at Hyde Park.

COMMUNITY -- The Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously September 17 to finalize its special permit decision for the Needham Pool and Racket Club at 1545 Central Avenue after debating and ultimately dropping a proposal that would have let four affected households trigger a board hearing over alleged noise or light violations. One board member had pushed for the mechanism, noting the club has already expanded its hours and court footprint by 20 to 25 percent with plans for a similar expansion toward 200 members; a colleague called the proposal "a bad precedent" for creating a direct appeal path around the building inspector. The board instead adopted standard revocation-for-cause language used in a prior town decision. Separately, Community Preservation Committee members said September 16 that the town's planned pickleball courts should come before them for a construction funding application this year, with a disc golf project expected to follow the year after; the pickleball design work was delayed after the same design team focused on the Elliot project. And at a September 17 Technology Advisory Board meeting on the Pollard Middle School rebuild, a board member noted that Needham has lost all three of the adult softball fields it once had over 30 years, leaving the Warner Field baseball diamond near Pollard as the town's last regular adult softball site ahead of that field's planned reconstruction as part of the Pollard project.
