Needham School Board Authorizes Geothermal Test Well for New Pollard Middle School

NEEDHAM — April 6, 2026 — Needham's School Building Committee authorized a geothermal test well at the Pollard Middle School site and received a first-pass lifecycle cost analysis pointing toward ground source heat pumps as the lowest 25-year cost option. The committee voted unanimously to approve a change order to Bond Building Construction and a $22,000 professional services supplement with HMFH Architects covering geotechnical engineer McPhail Associates' observation of the test drilling, expected during the last week of April. Niles Tua, Director of High-Performance Building Systems at RFS Engineering, told the committee that a full ground source heat pump system drawing on approximately 125 wells drilled 800 feet deep at the adjacent DeFazio field carries a 25-year lifecycle cost of roughly $43 million — nearly $10 million less than a conventional gas boiler system — once federal Inflation Reduction Act direct payments and MassCEC utility incentives are applied. Finance Committee Representative Barry Kaufman pressed for building performance standard penalty costs to be added to future iterations of the model, noting they "are going to come eventually" and would disproportionately burden the gas option. The committee also unanimously approved $194,941.13 in HMFH invoices for March 2026 Pollard design services, as well as a series of invoices for three other active town building projects totaling more than $1.2 million.
