Select Board · Meeting of October 15, 2026
Plainville's Select Board reviewed its automated license plate reader program and said it would draft a formal board-level policy for public debate. A Plainville Police Department official told the board the town runs three fixed cameras, on Taunton Street and South Street, plus a mobile unit, with two more cameras funded by a grant but not yet installed. The system was used three times in the past year, the official said, including in an armed robbery case on Tom Street that led to an arrest.
Annual maintenance costs run $1,200 to $1,500. One board member said, "I have very real concerns about the entire topic," citing worries about where the technology, which the official said captures only a two-and-a-half-second clip per vehicle, could go next. No vote was taken.
