SRA board hears construction update, sets September start for Union Point roads

WEYMOUTH — Union Point developer sets September start for road and utility construction after six-year permitting saga. New England Development's John Tuig and Paul Sincotta told the Southfield Redevelopment Authority board, chaired by Tom Henderson, that a mile-and-a-half backbone road and utility package at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station will go out for contractor award within a week, with pipe work starting in September and paving by spring 2027. Union tradespeople including Joe Hiltz and Neil Barhite pushed for project labor agreements covering future vertical construction; Vice Chairman Dave Rubin said that's "just not what it's about" at a construction briefing.
Tuig said the infrastructure supports roughly 2,400 housing units and 550,000 square feet of commercial space at full Weymouth build-out. Residents raised unresolved water-supply and traffic concerns, and retired Fire Chief Bob Leary urged hydrants be installed before any vertical building begins.
