Wellesley field panel drops disputed soccer permit, approves others

Playing Field Task Force · Meeting of August 14, 2026

Wellesley field panel drops disputed soccer permit, backs three others. The Playing Field Task Force voted 9-0 to approve permits for a Wellesley Mothers Forum fundraiser, a Cub Scout rocket launch at Kelly Field and a police-versus-fire softball game, but did not vote on a recurring unsanctioned soccer event after its organizer withdrew the application. A schools representative said "the school has absolutely zero support for that event," citing prior concerns over alcohol use.

Members also heard that a proposed solar-powered scoreboard for Sprague Field's varsity baseball diamond, championed by member Linda and the baseball booster club, will need approval from the School Committee, Design Review Board, Select Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. The high school's turf field, installed in 2016 as a roughly 10-year surface, has one to two seasons of life left, with replacement design already underway.
