Climate Panel Votes to Send Drainage Letter to Select Board on Center Road
Other Committee · Meeting of May 18, 2026
Needham's Climate Action Committee unanimously approved a letter urging the Select Board to prioritize stormwater collection in any Needham Center road design. The committee, which had originally drafted language endorsing the two-lane road options, revised its letter in real time after members concluded the lane question was effectively settled following town meeting, where the Select Board signaled it would pause further action. The final letter calls on any selected design to allow for improved surface water collection and reduced impermeable surfaces, citing well-documented flooding near Great Plain Avenue and Highland Avenue, and around the YMCA.
The committee also discussed — but did not vote on — whether to sign a letter of support for a MassEnergize grant application that would fund a residential electrification campaign toolkit; a decision was deferred pending confirmation from Green Needham volunteers, with a letter deadline of May 22. Town sustainability staff reported EverSource had approved just over $171,000 in rebates for conversion of gas unit heaters to air-source heat pumps at a town facility.
