Design Review Board approves oversized sign retroactively, issues developer reprimand

Needham Design Review Board approves retroactive construction sign permit and reprimands developer. The board voted 4-0 Monday to grant a special permit for an oversized four-by-eight-foot construction sign at 888 Great Plain Avenue, erected by Jay Dorenzo Properties without prior approval to promote a pending zoning change petition before town meeting. The chair opened the hearing with a formal reprimand — "you should have come to us before you installed it, not after" — and the board conditioned approval on removal either the day after the sign's related article is discussed at town meeting or by May 16, whichever comes sooner.

Town meeting member Chris Thomas of 130 Warren Street spoke against the sign during public comment, calling it an outsized effort "to tilt everybody's opinion in a certain direction" ahead of a zoning vote he plans to oppose. The board also unanimously approved three sign and awning applications for Standard Electric at 20 Kearney Road, covering a 22-square-foot illuminated cabinet sign, a blue vinyl side-entrance awning, and an awning sign.
