Dedham Board of Health voted unanimously to ban the sale of all kratom products, natural and synthetic.
Board of Health · Meeting of May 12, 2026
Dedham Board of Health voted unanimously to ban the sale of all kratom products, natural and synthetic. Chair Bernadette Chirokas said the board reviewed 22 written testimonies and consulted toxicologists and public health professors before approving the ban, which takes effect 10 days after filing with the town clerk and carries fines of $300 for first and second offenses. Vice Chair Emma Reidy said she was "personally in favor of prohibiting all Kratom sales, both synthetic and natural, within Dedham." A public commenter, Holly Truffle, told the board she lost her 25-year-old son to kratom toxicity and said 29 Massachusetts cities and towns are moving to ban it.
The board also voted to let health department staff approve routine grease-trap and sushi-rice variances and repealed a requirement that new restaurants install garbage disposals. Office manager Stephanie is leaving to become assistant director of the Council on Aging.
