TOWN -- At the July 21 Select Board meeting, Matthew Ching, commander of the local American Legion post and a Memorial Park trustee, told the board that the Memorial Park baseball field was "in tough condition" and likely unplayable for a Thursday night game due to flooding. He said the town used to have three large diamonds at DeFazio Park and is now down to one, and that the planned Pollard Middle School project will take Warner Field there out of use as well, leaving "two diamonds in the entire town" for four summer teams. Ching asked the Select Board to prioritize rebuilding Memorial Park, to explore partnering with St. Sebastian's and Babson for field access during construction, and to ensure Warner Field is fully rebuilt as part of the Pollard project's construction costs. Separately, the Needham Conservation Commission voted unanimously on July 23, and the Park and Recreation Commission met July 24, to approve the required local step under Article 97 allowing roughly 61,000 square feet of Warner Field to be used for geothermal wells serving the new Pollard Middle School. Officials from the Permanent Public Building Committee/School Building Committee said Warner Field will also serve as construction lay-down and worker parking space, and will be restored to its current recreational use, with an added accessible pathway, once work concludes. A Park and Recreation commissioner raised concerns during the July 24 meeting that a memorandum of agreement's stated cap of "not to exceed five years" for taking the field offline felt open-ended.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Dave Vellante, president of Needham Baseball and Softball, told the Select Board July 21 that the organization serves more than 1,000 families with spring, summer, fall and some winter programming, fielding four teams in summer plus additional games into late June, four to five teams in the fall, and six to eight in the spring. He said the Memorial Park field becomes unplayable with as little as a quarter inch of rain, and that losing Warner Field to construction would leave the program with "one and a half fields," making it difficult to run even half its current capacity. He noted the high school fields three baseball teams plus a middle school program that would also have to share reduced field space. Needham Youth Hockey Association announced that registration for its Mite Development, Learn to Play and Learn to Skate programs for the 2026-27 season is now open, with the club telling families "enjoy your summer" ahead of an on-ice return in late August.
