Needham Conservation Commission Continues All Six Hearings, Flags Unresolved Builder Permit

NEEDHAM — June 25, 2026 — Needham Conservation Commission continues all six pending hearings and rejects a tree removal request tied to an unresolved builder permit. At the June 25 meeting, Chair Dave Herr and six fellow commissioners voted unanimously to continue every hearing on the agenda — including the Chabad project at 1195 Central Avenue, a culvert replacement on George Aggett Road awaiting state DEP comments, a notice of intent at 33 Canterbury Lane, a buffer-zone retaining wall at 73 Curve Street, and a long-delayed matter at 160 Edgewater Drive, which Herr warned faces re-notification if test pits are not completed before July 9 — all to a July 9 return date. In the meeting's most substantive exchange, a homeowner at 443 Central Avenue who purchased the property from a builder in 2024 appeared to request removal of Norway maple trees overhanging her deck, only to learn mid-meeting that the property carries an open order of conditions: the builder planted six required white pines in the wrong location and never filed monitoring reports. "Neither attorney, no one actually — this is the first time we're hearing of it," the homeowner told the board. Staff members Deb and Tim, who had visited the site earlier that day, said the trees are healthy and not hazardous and recommended pruning; the Commission declined tree removal on a split informal poll and directed the homeowner to begin required monitoring, arrange additional plantings in the protected 25-to-50-foot buffer zone, and consult staff on-site for guidance.
