Needham Design Review Board approves hospital signs, street mural in unanimous votes

NEEDHAM — June 1, 2026 — Needham Design Review Board unanimously approved wayfinding signs for Boston Children's Hospital and cleared a public mural for Highland Avenue at its June 1 remote meeting. The board voted 5-0 to approve five signs at 360 First Avenue — four by special permit and one by right — after attorney Tim Sullivan of Goulston and Storrs explained that the hospital's shared parking garage with TripAdvisor had created confusion for patients and families since the facility opened earlier this year; signs ranged from 3.5 to 17 square feet. A wall sign for LV Group Real Estate at 42 Chestnut Street passed 5-0 with conditions requiring the upper lettering be trimmed from 10.6 to 10 inches to better fit within the recessed panel. The board offered informal design feedback — but took no vote — on a Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital proposal to demolish two buildings at 14 and 20 Oak Street and install a 42-space valet-only lot, with members pushing back on stockade fence aesthetics and recommending drought-tolerant plantings over arborvitaes; a formal special-permit application to the Planning Board is expected in July or August. The board voted 4-0 — with member Steve recusing due to his arts council membership — to approve "The Accidental Artist," a large-format exterior mural at 1299 Highland Avenue designed by muralist David Tang Olson and commissioned by the Needham Council for Arts and Culture, incorporating references to astronaut Sunita Williams, Echo Bridge, the 1887 Needham Center rail depot, and Harvey's Hardware, backed by a Town Meeting-approved $1,050 annual maintenance fund.
