Needham Design Review Board Continues Auto Center Sign Dispute to April 6

NEEDHAM — March 23, 2026 — Needham's Design Review Board continued a disputed sign application for a local auto repair business and approved two other projects at its March 23 remote meeting. The board voted 5-0 to push the 1032 Highland Avenue sign review for 4 A-Car Auto Center to April 6, after property owner John refused to cover or remove a second brand name — "A-Car Energy" — displayed on the pylon sign above the gas pricing display, telling the board, "A-Car Energy will stand tall — it's my brand." Chair Mark Loosian and members Haril Panda and Felix each said the building's multiple overlapping signs — including an illegal inspection-station sign the business is not licensed to display — could not be permitted as submitted. The board unanimously approved two channel-letter signs for new tenant VIP Tire at 444 Hillside Avenue, conditioned on proportional size reductions to bring both within the town's 32-square-foot bounding-box limit, and approved exterior facade alterations at 87 Chestnut Street — including a projecting aluminum composite accent band with recessed downlights — with a condition that the accent-band lighting turn off by 11 p.m. nightly and signage excluded from the approval pending a separate application.
