Needham's School Building Committee unanimously chose a 100-percent geothermal ground-source heat pump system for the new Pollard Middle School at its April 28 meeting. Chair Richard Cream moved the recommendation after consultants presented an updated Life Cycle Cost Analysis showing geothermal delivering the lowest projected 25-year operating and maintenance costs among four options evaluated for the roughly $255-million project. The committee added motion language — sharpened by member Erwin after he arrived late — stating that "this recommendation is based on the risks associated with the incentive programs at the time of the project requirement," a hedge against possible loss of federal Inflation Reduction Act tax credits and state utility rebates before construction begins.

Members noted that MSBA reimbursement rates have risen roughly 20 percent since the Sunita school was built, while construction costs have climbed an estimated 40 percent, leaving the town to absorb a larger share of costs. The design team reported 125 geothermal wells planned, a test well about to be drilled at Warner Field, and a first meeting held with the MBTA regarding a utility tunnel crossing under MBTA tracks. Cost estimates go to estimators May 12, with the committee set to reconvene May 8 for preliminary figures and a June 22 target for voting to approve the MSBA schematic design submission.
