Milton School Committee Elects Loring Chair, Approves Special Education Stabilization Policy

MILTON — April 29, 2026 — Milton School Committee reorganizes with new chair and eyes La Salle College building for school space. The committee elected Mark Loring as chair and Anna Varghese as vice chair by unanimous roll call votes at its April 29 reorganization and regular meeting, welcoming newly elected member Stevie Caldwell and sending off four-year student representative Elias Karos ahead of his June graduation from Milton High. Superintendent John Phelan announced that La Salle College's Adams Street building is expected to come to market in summer 2026 following a merger of its nursing program with Curry College, and that district and facilities staff had already toured the property as a potential solution to what Phelan called acute elementary-level space shortages at Cunningham and Collicott — with La Salle's president scheduled to visit the district the following Wednesday. The committee approved two finance policies on second reading — a special education stabilization fund policy and a circuit breaker policy — and accepted a third quarter budget report projecting a year-end operating surplus of approximately $34,000, with a possible additional $260,000 in circuit breaker reimbursement pending a state supplemental budget. The meeting closed with a unanimous vote to enter executive session to discuss the potential real estate acquisition.
