Select Board Approves Hampton Inn Licenses Despite $265,000 in Lost Room Tax

STOUGHTON — April 14, 2026 — Stoughton Select Board reinstates Hampton Inn licenses 4-1, citing $265,000 in lost room-tax revenue. The board approved both an inn-holder license and a common victualler's license for PVG-5 Hospitality LLC, doing business as Hampton Inn at 449 Page Street, after the hotel spent nearly two years operating as a migrant shelter without notifying the town. Town Manager Tom Calder told Hampton Inn representative Sandra Morgan that the closure cost Stoughton an estimated $534,000 across two hotels — roughly $265,000 to $270,000 attributable to the Hampton Inn alone — and that the town had been forced to appeal to Governor Healey's office for partial compensation. "We feel like you exited in the dark of night without any communication," Calder said, adding that the board could not attach financial conditions to the license under state statute but was inviting ownership to meet with Calder and Member Scott Carrara to begin rebuilding the relationship. Morgan agreed to bring the request to her owners. Carrara voted against both licenses; Members Lori Jakes, Stephen Cavey, Deborah Roberts, and Chair Tom McCriskey voted in favor. The board also swore in Officers Chelsea Filippini and Paul Rourke of the Stoughton Police Department and unanimously tabled a financial policy manual for two weeks to allow the Finance Committee to submit edits.
