Wellesley's building committee has settled on a taller, gable-roofed design for the new Morses Pond bath house after safety concerns about people climbing on a lower roof.

TOWN -- The Permanent Building Committee voted 3-1 to move forward with a gable-style roof for the planned Morses Pond beach and bath house, favoring the taller design over an earlier shed-roof concept, the Natural Resources Commission was told at its July 21 meeting. Commission Secretary Joe Schott, who represented the NRC at the PBC meeting, said the shift was driven by safety concerns that the lower, shed-style roof could be an "attractive nuisance" inviting people to climb onto it and get hurt. Wellesley Police, asked for input, indicated "some preference" for the gable design but said they could work with whichever option the boards chose, Schott said. Some NRC members pushed back, arguing the taller design increases the building's bulk and eliminates covered shaded space; architects said the gable version would likely cost somewhat more than the shed design. The design team is now exploring separating the shade structure from the bathroom building to control the building's overall scale. Separately, commissioners discussed the entrance gate on Turner Road, which is expected to continue opening as needed, with a possible remote-lock capability under consideration. Wellesley Recreation is also promoting an "End of Summer Sale" at Morses Pond, according to the department's website.
HIGH SCHOOL -- No games were scheduled for Wellesley High School teams during the period, per ArbiterLive. The athletics department notes that fall sports registration opened July 1, and tryouts for high school teams begin Monday, Aug. 24, with tryout and first-week information to be posted in the second week of August.
YOUTH LEAGUES -- The Wellesley Youth Basketball Association is seeking a new director, according to its website. The Wellesley Youth Hockey Association has closed its online uniform store for the 2026-27 season; players needing new uniforms were told to contact Joanne Hinchley.
