Milton school finance subcommittee maps budget timeline, nears finance director hire
School Committee · Meeting of May 27, 2026
Milton's School Committee Finance Subcommittee closed out its year Tuesday with a transition update, a near-complete finance director search, and a new multi-month budget calendar on the table. Outgoing Assistant Superintendent of Finance Katie told the subcommittee a purchasing freeze has been in place since before April school vacation, that roughly 600 employees are in the middle of lump-sum summer payroll processing, and that the fiscal year 2026 books should require only a single circuit breaker transfer to close — a far cleaner position than the prior year. An interview panel led by Colin, along with Bill Fish, Martha Sandoval, and payroll processor Maureen, screened 11 applicants, interviewed five or six, and produced three finalists, all with at least 20 years of municipal finance experience; a contract-offer meeting was set for the following day.
The subcommittee also reviewed a Budget Coordinating Committee calendar that would require completed contingent and non-contingent school budgets by early December, and flagged a goal of adopting annual percentage-increase fee policies for transportation, athletics, and building rentals so families face predictable, incremental cost changes rather than sudden spikes.
