Needham Conservation Commission Continues Walker School Hearing, Issues Two Culvert Orders

Conservation · Meeting of July 9, 2026

Needham Conservation Commission continued a Walker School riverfront expansion hearing and issued orders of conditions for two culvert replacements at its July 9 meeting. The commission voted unanimously to continue the Walker School notice of intent — covering a 5,760-square-foot school addition and demolition of a hexagonal building within the Charles River's 200-foot riverfront area to be replaced by an outdoor amphitheater — to July 23 pending receipt of an updated wetlands report, planting plan for 12 new trees, and invasive species protocol. Commission staff flagged that an infiltration system for the addition may be undersized under Needham's new stormwater bylaw, which took effect in May 2026.

On 73 Curve Street, the commission voted 4-0 to issue a positive determination of applicability, rejecting the homeowner's bid for a simpler negative determination and requiring a full notice of intent for a proposed two-wall retaining and grading project in a wetland buffer zone. Orders of conditions were issued for the George Agate Road Culvert Replacement and Dedham Avenue/Sutton Road Alderbrook Wall Replacement projects after revisions satisfying state DEP comments — most notably replacing one-foot streambed stones with six-inch stones — were confirmed.
