Norwood School Committee Re-elects Hilts, Names Coakley Studio for Jack Tolman

NORWOOD — June 18, 2026 — Norwood School Committee reorganizes, names new Coakley Middle School broadcast studio for veteran educator Jack Tolman. The four-member panel, meeting without member Joan Kenney, unanimously re-elected David Hilts as chair and Michael Sanfilippo as vice chair before voting 4-0 to name the new facility the Jack Tolman Broadcast Studio, honoring a 35-year educator and community media figure who has worked with Norwood Public Schools and Norwood Community Media since 1991. The committee voted 3-1 — Hilts dissenting on quality-over-quantity grounds — to approve six superintendent evaluation goals for Timothy Luff covering multi-tiered student support, technology and screen-time policy, district communications, and a long-range facilities assessment. Business Manager Sean Manuel reported a projected year-end surplus of $316,000 on the district's $65.3 million budget, up from $260,000 at the third quarter, with the school nutrition program on track for a $468,000 profit in the first year of its Chartwells contract. The committee also approved a $17,360 state cybersecurity grant and moved its first fall meeting to Thursday, August 27.
