Wellesley Planning Board pushes forward two projects and opens debate on regulating AI data centers. Meeting late for lack of quorum, Vice Chair Thomas Taylor ran the session in Chair Marc Charney's absence, voting 4-0 with members Edward Chazen, James Roberti and Patricia Mallett to continue an inclusionary zoning permit for 26 Washington Street to September 14 and to approve a major modification at 42 Oak Street. Roberti raised concerns about MassBay Community College's roughly $75 million cybersecurity center proposal, prompting discussion of a Mansfield-style tiered data center bylaw; Roberti called data centers a facility with "no positives" apart from low traffic.
The board also flagged a two-foot, three-inch setback addition at 81 Glen Road as an "intensified" nonconformity for the Zoning Board of Appeals to weigh, and heard Planning Director Rob Wachilla's plan to seek $350,000 plus a 10 percent contingency for the town's comprehensive plan at November's Special Town Meeting.
