Milton School Committee Votes to Study Pre-K and Kindergarten School at Former Library Site

MILTON — June 4, 2026 — Milton School Committee unanimously backs early-childhood design study at library site. The committee voted 5-0 Thursday to direct the School Building Committee's architect, DLR Group, to analyze whether a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten school serving roughly 340 to 350 kindergartners and approximately 120 preschool students could be built and renovated into the former library property. School Building Committee Chair Sean O'Rourke said the town is in Module 2 of the nine-module Massachusetts School Building Authority process, having shortlisted three owner's project manager candidates from 11 applicants, and warned that any configuration outside MSBA's authorized options would reset the process by one to two years and forfeit an estimated $45 to $50 million in state reimbursement on a prior $173 million middle school cost estimate. Superintendent Mark Phelan acknowledged the pre-K and K option "really doesn't" relieve space pressure at Pierce Middle School, calling that a trade-off the committee must weigh. A member noted after the vote that the town does not own the library property. In separate action, the committee approved revised homeschooling policy IHBG on an expedited basis, eliminating discretionary language on athletics and AP course eligibility for home-educated students and granting a one-year exception to a family that navigated the previous conflicting policy in good faith.
