Needham Solid Waste Committee Previews June 23 Rate Hearing, Plans Fall Fix-It Clinic

NEEDHAM — June 2, 2026 — Needham's Solid Waste Advisory Committee reviewed a spring run of new programs and flagged an August recycling contract deadline at its June 2 meeting. Chair Jeffrey D. Heller reported that the committee's debut Fix-It Clinic at the Needham Public Library drew 41 people on April 11, with 19 volunteer repair coaches completing 15 repairs; post-event feedback pointed toward holding the event twice a year. A food waste diversion pilot launched April 30 at the Public Safety Administration Building collected roughly 36 pounds in its first month using containers purchased with Recycling Dividends Program grant funds. Heller also noted favorable recycling market trends — single-stream processing costs have fallen from $82.44 to $50.98 per ton since December — while flagging the collapse of the number-one PET plastic market, which he attributed to cheap virgin plastic undercutting domestic recyclers. The committee's previously recommended 3 percent Pay-As-You-Throw bag rate increase, which would take effect October 1, faces a Select Board public hearing on June 23, and Casella Recycling's contract with the town expires August 26 with no successor procurement yet finalized.
